All about Sweet Corn!

Objectives: Children will be able to...

  1. Observe the physical properties of a corn.

  2. Identify the parts of a corn.

  3. Predict and compare between a pearl corn and a normal corn.

I showed 2 different kinds of corn – ‘Pearl Corn’ and ‘Normal Corn’ to children and have them to compare the physical properties (size, shape, colour) of each corn.

Children were tasked to colour and write their name on the Corn Predictors.

Children were allowed to paste their own Corn Predictor on the whiteboard according to the type of corn which they predict will be sweeter.

The K1 Group’s Predictions:

Half of the group predict that Pearl Corn will be sweeter.

On the other hand, the rest of the group predict that Normal Corn will be sweeter.

After predicting which corn will be sweeter, children were allowed to taste both of the corn to find out which type of corn is sweeter.

Next, I recorded their observations and responses after tasting both of the corn.

Corn Party!

Objectives: Children will be able to...

  1. Observe and infer the different uses of corn in our daily lives.

  2. Identify and communicate the by-products of corn through mind-map.

I showed and explained the various by-products of corn. Children were able to find the word – ‘Corn’ on the packaging.

Incidental Learning Opportunity:

One of the child noticed a picture of a mill on the packaging of the corn chips. Hence, it was teachable moment for me to explain the process of making corn flour and corn chips.

By-Products of corn:

  • Corn plastic plates and cups

  • Corn flavour milk

  • Corn chips

  • Corn bits

  • Popcorn

I recorded the children’s ideas of the by-products of corn that they have seen, tasted or are possibilities using a mind map.

Children sang and danced to the song – ‘Popcorn In A Pot’ according to the actions formed by them.

Afterwards, each of them were invited to circle the word ‘Corn’ found on the lyrics sheet.
